I had written my previous website completely by hand but with mobile devices such as tablets and phones becoming so popular on the Internet I decided my site needed a facelift. With Google changing their ranking to list mobile designed sites higher I decided this summer would be a good time. I wanted a fully functional website but I also wanted to an included my blog which was hosted on WordPress’s website. After doing some research it sounded like an installation of WordPress on my hosting account would do everything I wanted. The installation of WordPress is straight forwarded and surprisingly easy. I shopped around for a hosting company who offered unlimited space because Imy pictures take a lot of space and I wanted to keep all my clients photos under password protected pages on my website and I need over 20GB for that. I looked around and found one that allows php, MySQL and all the other requirements for a WordPress site. After looking at a few hosting options I settled on one I have used before that also offered one click install for WordPress and unlimited storage. I decided not to use their one click install and do it manually because I am picky with out things are setup. After I got WordPress setup I copied over some of my blog posts from my WordPress.com site over. I wanted to make my site look as similar to my old site as possible so I tried to make my own theme. It was working but found it was taking way too much time to get all the little parts to function correctly. I also wanted to make sure it looked good on all devices from phones to tablets and computers. After wasting a few days working on my own theme decided to see if someone had already created one I could use. I ended up finding a template that looked 95% like my website and had all the features I wanted. Normally I am too picky and I don’t like to use others designs but I was trying to keep an open mind. The theme I found wasn’t free but since it was very close to what I wanted and I would save me tons of time I thought it was worth a try. The one I found was called Superba and I am using the child theme so I can make custom changes to the code and still be able to update the parent code. Once I get the site the way I like I plan on turning on the online store options so people can purchase my photography from my website. That will be a different day.
